Student Protests Spread; Clashes Erupt In Pattan, Hajin

Srinagar: With no end in sight to protests by school going students, clashes erupted in Bandipora districts Hajin town and in Baramulla district’s Pattan area on Tuesday morning.

Sources from the two areas said that clashes between uniformed students and armed forces erupted early this morning as schools started opening for normal class work.

They said that armed forces including J&K police and the CRPF personnel used tear smoke shells on protesting students of local government higher secondary school in Pattan who took out a demonstration and marched up to the main market.

“There was disruption in the market as clashes erupted,” sources said. “As soon as the protesting students reached the main market, forces fired tear smoke canisters on them triggering clashes as students responded by pelting stones.”

A passenger who is traveling to Srinagar told the FPK over phone, “I am stuck in traffic as situation is very tense.”

“Students from GDC Pattan too have come out and joined the protests,” he said. “Many students have been injured who are being shifted to sub-divisional hospital Pattan.”

In Hajin, students from government higher secondary school, situated near main bus stand, came out raising slogans in favour of “freedom”. However, forces armed with tear gas canisters resorted to shelling, triggering clashes.

Local reports said that several students were injured in the clashes which are still going on. “The male students were supported by scores of girl students from the educational institute who too came out in shape of a rally.”

J&K police spokesperson confirmed about clashes in Hajin, however, he added, “I have no information about Pattan incident, if it has happened or not.”
