Srinagar: Injured in alleged firing by across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, an employee of General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) has succumbed to injuries.
He was one of the five people who were injured in the alleged Pakistani shelling along the LoC on Thursday.
Sub-divisional police officer Mendhar, Riaz Tantray, told the Hindustan Times that Parvaiz Ahmed, who was working as a labourer with GREF, was injured in Thursday’s firing at Balnoi.
Ahmed, a resident of Dara Dulian in Poonch, died at the Army Hospital in Rajouri at 5 am on Friday.
On their part, Pakistani authorities claimed that two civilians were killed after Indian troops stationed along the LoC fired mortar shells.
GREF is part of the Border Roads Organisation, a division of the ministry of defence responsible for the upkeep of road network along India’s frontiers.
On Thursday, one GREF labourer was killed on the spot and five others injured in the cross-border shelling.
Four civilians have been killed in Nowshera and Krishna Ghati sectors of Rajouri and Poonch districts since May 1 when two Indian soldiers – JCO Paramjit Singh and BSF head constable Prem Sagar – were killed and beheaded allegedly by Pakistan’s border action team in KG sector.
A 2003 ceasefire is regularly violated along the LoC as troops of India and Pakistan posted along LoC fire mortars across the border.
At his daily briefing, the spokesperson of United Nations Secretary General, has said that Antonio Guetteres is monitoring the situation. “He is watching,” the spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said.
He said that the UN chief was concerned over the Kashmir situation.
