Kulbhushan Jadhav files mercy petition before Pakistan Army Chief

Kulbhushan Jadhav is an Indian national detained and sentenced to death by a military court in Pakistan.

Srinagar: The Pakistan army on Thursday revealed that an alleged Indian spy awaiting death sentence in its country, Kulbhushan Jadhav has filed a mercy petition before its chief.

“Commander Kulbhuhsan Jadhav, the serving Indian Naval Officer, who has been sentenced to death, on charges of espionage sabotage and terrorism has made a mercy petition to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS),” Pakistan’s army’s media wing – ISPR – said in a statement this evening.

The ISPR statement was put on its Twitter handle.

However, it may be recalled that India has approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is based in The Hague, seeking deferment of the death sentence which was granted.

Jadhav had earlier appealed to the Military Appellate Court but it was rejected, the ISPR informed.

Under the law, the statement added, Jadhav is eligible to appeal for clemency to the COAS (which he has done) and if rejected, subsequently to the President of Pakistan.

Jadhav was handed over death sentence by a military court in Pakistan.

He has been accused of spying and causing damage to state establishments across Pakistan which Pakistan claims Jadhav has accepted.
