NIA issues notice to Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leaders again

Srinagar: According to a statement by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday, has once again served notices to Tehreek-e-Huriyat leaders including Mohammad Altaf Shah and Raja Meraj-u-Din Kalwal and asked them to attend Humhama camp on Monday, July 24.

In August 2016, after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, the NIA initiated a preliminary enquiry (PE) to probe funds inciting unrest in the Valley suspecting that these funds were coming from across the border and were being channelized to stone-pelters through suspect bank accounts linked to militants or separatists in the Valley.

Earlier, on June 28, the NIA had called Altaf Ahmed Shah to Delhi where he was subjected to questioning for several days.

The Hurriyat spokesperson said that on Eid-ul-Fitr both leaders returned to the valley, however, Altaf Ahmad Shah and Meraj-ud-din were again served a notice from the NIA. Both were preparing to leave for Delhi and even had made necessary arrangements and reserved their tickets, however were arrested by state police under section 107 & 151 and after serving detention for 20 days were released on july 17th.

“On the 18th of this month, NIA once again issued notices to Altaf Ahmad Shah, Peer Saif Ullah & Raja Meraj u Din Kalwal, asking them to attend Humhama office on 24th July,” the Hurriyat spokesperson added.

On June 29, the NIA had declared the case “as good as closed”.

The agency has found that all transactions through these bank accounts were legitimate and not connected in any way to terror funding.

“No evidence of terror funding or financial aid to stone-pelters has been found in that case. All bank accounts that were brought under the scanner have been found to have had legitimate business transactions. That case is as good as closed,” a senior NIA had officer said.
