Army apologizes for beating up eight policemen

Srinagar: The Indian Army, on Monday, has apologized for beating up eight policemen in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, a senior police official said.

Eight policemen, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, were injured after army men allegedly thrashed them, and ransacked the police station, for allegedly stopping their vehicle at a check-post in Gund area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district late Friday night.

A police official had said that some private vehicles carrying army personnel of 24 RR in civvies were stopped at a routine ‘naka’ in Gund late night.

“The army men got down from the vehicles and roughed up the policemen on duty,” he said.

Reports said that the policemen were saved by the locals.

“The Army has apologized and ordered a court of inquiry,” Inspector General of Police, Muneer Ahmad Khan told the media.

Police had registered a case against the group of army personnel for vandalizing the Gund police station.

This happened after the Director General of Police lodged a strong protest against the Saturday evening incident when the soldiers returning from the Amarnath Yatra were stopped at a checkpost in Gund.
