Srinagar: The army will take “suitable action” against soldiers who desecrated the bodies of two Lashkar militants killed in a gunfight on September 14. The statement came after a video showing Indian Army soldiers trampling on the dead militants went viral on social media.
The armed forces had gunned down Abu Ismail, Lashkar-e-Toiba’s Valley chief and his associate Abu Qasim at Nowgam on Srinagar’s outskirts.
According to the police, Abu Ismail was the mastermind of the July attack on a bus that killed eight Amarnath pilgrims.
Army spokesperson in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, said the army had taken cognisance of the video and “suitable action” would be taken against the soldiers. He did not elaborate what the action would be.

The video clip which showed army soldiers keeping their shoes on throats and heads of Abu Qasim and his associate was also seen shared all over the social media.

Abusing of dead bodies is considered as a war crime under International Humanitarian Law.
