Gunfight resumes in Uri, 1 more militant killed

Uri: The Indian Army on Monday afternoon resumed the anti-militancy operation in Kalgai village on Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector following the inputs about the presence of more militants in the area.

The police said that they have also killed one more militant in today’s gunfight.

“Another Pakistani terrorist located in Uri. The area has been cordoned and the encounter is on,” DGP Jammu and Kashmir police SP Vaid said on Twitter.

“Army has resumed the operation in the area. They have the information about the presence of more militants hiding in the area,” SHO Uri Tabrez Ahmad told the Free Press Kashmir over the phone.

The ‘Karwan-e-Aman’ bus service, operating between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad ferried around 34 passengers this morning for the Pakistan Administrated Kashmir (PAK).

“We are yet to get in touch with the officials accompanying the passengers to the crossing-point (Kaman-Post) as the area has no mobile connectivity,” said an official.

Three militants were killed while an army soldier and four civilians injured in a gunfight between militants and the army in Kalgai, Uri area of Baramulla district on Sunday. Two residential houses also suffered damage during the gun-battle.

Almost an hour after the bus left for the Kaman Post, the army blocked all kind of roads leading to encounter site- Kalgai belt.

Kalgai is a border village that is almost eight kilometers from the Line of Control (LoC).

On Sunday, Director general of police SP Vaid said that the militants killed in the Uri gunfight were planning a “major strike” on the army base on the pattern of one seen in September last year.

“We have averted a major tragedy. The way a suicide attack was carried out on the army base last year, the group of militants killed in Uri today was planning a similar strike,” he said on the sidelines of police-public mela at Bakhshi Stadium in Srinagar.
