Tangdar Doctor’s suicide warning shows how deeply the system is against over-burdened Medicos

‘Transfer me else I will commit suicide’, says Doctor ‘in depression’ serving at Tangdar for last 25 years

Tangdar: In a case that brought to the fore how deeply the healthcare system is affected, and how over-burdened the doctors in Kashmir are, an about-to-retire doctor has threatened suicide.

Emotionally hurt and visibly distressed, a medico has threatened to commit suicide if he is not transferred out of the remote Tangdar area of frontier District Kupwara where he has been serving as medical officer from last three decades.

Dr Parvaiz Iqbal, was appointed in 1990 and posted in District Hospital Baramulla from where he was shifted to Tangdar just after two years. Dr. Iqbal has said that since 1992 he has been ‘left to rot in the remotest area of the valley without caring for his own health and the family’.

“In 1990 I was appointed and posted at District Hospital Baramulla. Two years later I was I was transferred to Tangdar. Since then I am here…rather rotting here,” he said.

Dr. Iqbal who has a specialization in Gynecology says he has been overburdened and looking after the ultra-sonography and other departments for which no specialised doctor has been posted in the hospital.

“I also attend on call duties round the clock. I also see OPD patients,” he said, adding that he had applied for transfer several times with the CMO’s Director’s and health minister’s offices, but nobody ever took up his case.

Stagnant at one place from over two decades, Dr. Iqbal said he is suffering from depression. “I am going to retire in next 3 to 4 years. I am suffering from depression due to the long stagnation at one station for last 25 years.”

“If my request is again overlooked, I have no option but to commit suicide. I have landed in severe depression due to long stagnation at one place of posting”.
