Witness featured in the New York Times’ best Photo-books of 2017 list

Witness – a photo book by nine Kashmir based photo-journalists – promoted as a “counter” to the larger “anti-Kashmir narrative in mainland Indian media”, has made it to the New York Times’ best photo books of 2017 list.

The book chronicles Kashmir from 1986 to 2016 – over a period of three decades – through the works of nine photographers.

Edited by documentary filmmaker of ‘Jashn-e-Azaadi’ fame, Sanjay Kak, the book is published by Yaarbal Press, is a 400 page and 200 image journey through three generations.

The New York Times says, “There is a lot of grace in this compendium of photojournalism about Kashmir, and there is much despair as well.”

Talking about the content of the Photobook, NYT says, “This book about the region, the product of nine photojournalists working over three decades, merits the title “Witness.” The photographers are not outsiders visiting on assignment. They are all Kashmiri — from Meraj Ud Din (born in 1959) to Azaan Shah (born in 1997) — and the impact of their familiarity with and emotional commitment to the place shows. Put together by the New Delhi-based Yaarbal press, the book is an exceedingly beautiful art object, despite its grim contents.”
