Avalanche hits ski resort Gulmarg, Swedish skier killed, another reported missing

An avalanche hit the Tourist resort of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday, police said. A foreign tourist was killed while another is reported missing.

An official said that a Swedish tourist, identified as Daniel, was killed while another went missing after the avalanche struck near second phase of Gandola cable car project on Affarwat peak.

“Two tourists came under the avalanche and one of them was so far evacuated to nearby hospital by the rescuers where he was declared brought dead,” he said.

The official said that searches are underway to trace the missing skier.

Earlier, the Additional Commissioner Kashmir, had issued an avalanche warning for areas of Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts of Kashmir division.

The warning was valid from 1700 hrs January 17, to 1700 hrs January 18.

While all concerned Deputy Commissioners had been asked to take all precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident, the general public had been appealed not to venture in the said areas during the period.
