Haryana Police arrest 3 attackers in Kashmiri students assault case, hunt for others on

Hours after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti demanded a probe into the incident, Haryana police arrested 3 people on Saturday for allegedly assaulting two Kashmiri students in Mahendargarh district.

Mahendragarh Superintendent of Police (SP), Kamaldeep Goyal said that on the basis of CCTV footage, police identified six persons involved in the incident. Three were arrested, whereas efforts are on to nab the others invovled in the attack. Investigation is underway, Goyal said.

On Friday, a mob of around 10-15 men allegedly assaulted two Kashmiri youths studying at the Central University of Haryana, Mahendergarh.

At around 2:30pm, Aftab and Amjad were returning to campus after Friday prayers when they were beaten up by the mob. According to students, they were leaving the mosque when a group of men started following them. Shocked and confused by the sudden attack, the students looked around for help but people just stood there and watched.

The victims suffered several injuries and were rushed to a local government hospital for treatment.

“Soon after the police arrived at the spot, we went to the hospital for checkup and returned to university campus after completing all the medical procedure. We told the faculty about incident and lodged a complaint with the university,” he added.

Shocked and disturbed by the entire incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti urged her Haryana counterpart, ML Khattar, to ensure strict action.

The Opposition had cornered the government in the Legislative Assembly on Saturday after alleging that they have failed to protect students who are living or staying outside the state.

While talking about the case of two students who were assaulted in Mahendragarh area of Haryana on Friday, National Conference General Secretary Ali Sagar said that such incidents ill further alienate the youth of the valley.

The government, in its reply, informed that Haryana police have arrested three accused involved in the incident. Abdul Rehman Veeri, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs said that two students allegedly thrashed by a group of 15 people in Mahendragarh.
