After Lenin, Periyar, Ambedkar, Mookerjee, now Gandhi’s statue vandalized in Kerela

Kannur: The desecration of statues in India continues as in Kannur, Kerala, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalized on Thursday, reported the NDTV.

The glasses and the garland of the statue were broken by an unidentified person.

Local people claim they saw the man targeting the statue and a passerby even took a picture with his mobile phone but the man has not yet been identified as the photo is from a distance and does not show his face.

Senior police sources have told NDTV that they do not suspect any political motive behind the attack on Gandhi’s statue. Police suspect it is a “one off incident.”

Police sources have described the man wearing a brown shirt and saffron coloured lungi, which is commonly worn in Kannur and other parts of Kerala.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

On March 6, Just 48 hours after the 25 year long Left rule ended in Tripura, a statue of Lenin, that stood in the heart of Belonia town in Tripura, was brought down by celebrating BJP supporters amid chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai.’

The statue has been there for the past five years.

The CPM (M) has called it ‘communist phobia’, while the BJP has said that the statue was bulldozed by the people ‘oppressed’ by the Left.

On Wednesday, After Lenin and Periyar statues, a statue of B R Ambedkar was vandalised in Meerut district’s Mawana Khurd on Wednesday morning.

According to a news report in Delhi based News18, Uttar Pradesh police swung into action and rushed a team to the spot to avoid any untoward incident. However, sources said that it is not a “fall-out of any political vendetta”, but related to local caste tension. No clashes have been reported in the area and the statue has been re-installed, they said.

A statue of Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was also vandalised on Wednesday by unidentified men in south Kolkata, police said. The statue was found partially damaged and its face blackened. A poster was also found from the spot with the word “radicals” written on it, they said.
