Arresting girls in Kashmir for wearing veils is naked police terrorism, says JKLF Chief Yasin Malik

Warns of agitation if ‘police highhandedness’ not stopped

Srinagar: Condemning the arrest of two sisters Tanfiyah Rasool and Sumaira Rasool of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik on Wednesday said police have been arresting fathers in place of sons but Mehbooba Mufti-led regime that raises slogans like ‘Beti Bechao’ has started a new trend by arresting girls or fathers in place of daughters.

“Arresting fathers for their sons has been an old ploy of Indian oppression but a new trend has been initiated by Mehbooba regime by arresting fathers in place of daughters. Incarcerating young girls Tanfiyah Rasool and Sumaira Rasool of Islamabad is nothing but naked police terrorism,” Malik said in a statement.

The statement issued here said that a delegation from Anantnag called on Malik on Wednesday at JKLF office here and informed him about the “highhandedness” of police in the district.

“SP Tahir Ashraf Bhatti has crossed every limit of tyranny and shame as he has started a vicious campaign against girls and ladies wearing veils in the area,” the delegation told Malik. “The police officer is summoning girls who wear veils, to police stations, and in case they fail to present themselves before him, their houses are raided; their fathers are arrested, humiliated, tortured and choicest abuses are showered at them.”

“The abusive language used by the police officer has become intolerable and his oppressive behaviour has made lives of many families a hell,” the delegation informed adding that two sisters Tanfiyah Rasool and Sumaira Rasool have been kept at police station Sadder and are being tortured mentally for the last many days.

Malik said the girl students studying at Kashmir University and those who wear veil are being specially targeted by police which shows their anti-Muslim attitude.

“This highhandedness of police is not acceptable at all and if the so-called rulers did not stop this ugly practice, Kashmiris will have no option but to launch a full-fledged agitation against it,” JKLF chief warned.
