Rising Kashmir Editor shot and killed in Srinagar, media fraternity shocked

Srinagar: The Editor of Rising Kashmir Shujaat Bukhari, on Thursday, was shot by unidentified gunmen outside his office in Srinagar, a day before Eid and few minutes before Iftiyar. Bukhari succumbed to his injuries and was declared ‘brought dead’ at the hospital.

He is said to have received multiple bullets in the head and abdomen. He was accompanied by his driver and Personal Security Officer (PSO), who are critical.

Bukhari was a vocal advocate for the rights of Kashmiris and defended the rights on Indian and International Television. A veteran journalist and the editor of Srinagar based Rising Kashmir, he previously worked as Bureau Chief of The Hindu for 15 years.

An extensively travelled journalist Bukhari was a writer in Kashmiri and Urdu and also the president of Adbee Markaz Kamraz, the biggest and oldest cultural and literary organization of Valley.

Bukhari had earlier survived three assassination attempts during his challenging career.

The media fraternity in Kashmir was shocked when the news broke of the editor being shot in the Press Avenue.

“Today we have lost a well read journalist, a great human being and a big asset. May Allah grant him paradise,” a senior journalist said.

“16 years ago Parvaz Sultan was assassinated in the same flat and the same place. I cannot believe that it has happened again. History repeated itself so brutally and took away yet another dear friend,” says a journalist close to Bukhari.

The brutal killing has sent shockwaves across Kashmir.
