Veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari laid to rest, thousands attend his funeral

Veteran journalist and Editor of the Rising Kashmir Shujaat Bukhari was laid to rest in his hometown Kreeri, Barmaulla. Thousands of people ranging from politicians, academicians, journalists, traders participated in his funeral.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, state Public Works Minister Naeem Akhtar, senior Congress leader Saifuddin Soz, many veteran journalists were attended Bukhari’s last rites. .

On Thursday, three gun men on a motorcycle shot Bukhari outside his office in the Press Enclave. In the attack his two personal security guards were also killed. He had left office to reach home for Iftaar.

Bukhari’s murder was condemned by all across party lines. His death sent a shock wave which shattered the entire media community.

Political leaders such as Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Congress President Rahul Gandhi offered their condolences, calling the killing a “cowardice and a mindless act.”

The Editors Guild of India condemned the “dastardly attack” on Bukhari, calling it a “new low.” Meanwhile militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba also condemned the killing and blamed ‘Indian agencies’. They also demanded an international probe into the matter.
