Rumors over Article 35-A leads to Shopian clashes, Mirwaiz clears confusion

Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq cleared the confusion that had been created regarding hearing of Article 35-A, which was to take place on August 31. Citizens had mistook the fresh petition filed on Monday to be the actual hearing.

“Confusion is being created among people about the hearing of case pertaining to Article 35A in the Indian Supreme Court for today. In this regard, what has been reported in media, is that a fresh case has been filed challenging Article 35A in SC,” Mirwaiz said.

“The original case pending in SC which is listed for 31st, though the exact date would be made public on Tuesday. Most likely this new case may also be clubbed with the petitions filed by RSS backed NGOs and individuals,” he added.

Earlier, a police spokesman clarified that the main hearing on Article 35-A is listed for August 31. He took exception to some sections of the media circulating wrong news on the legislation.

The government counsel in the Supreme Court Shoeb Alam told Greater Kashmir that the main hearing is on August 31.

He said: “It is a fresh petition coming up for hearing for admission. The bunch of petitions challenging Article 35A is likely to be listed for hearing on August 31.”

Due to the rumors floating around, scores of civilians clashed with armed forces in South Kashmir’s Shopian on Monday, which led to 13 people being injured.

A police official said that the youth pelted the forces deployed there with stones. The forces responded by fired tear gas and pellets, resulting in injuries to 13 protesters.

An official at district hospital Shopian said they received around 13 youth with pellet injuries.

Three youth with injuries in their eyes have been shifted to SMHS hospital in Srinagar, he added.
