Anantnag: Multiple localities of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district Wednesday staged a massive protest against district administration for leaving a vast area with dug-up roads.
Reports said that locals from Kadipora, Matan Chowk, Iqbal Market, Dangarpora and Court Road raised slogans against UEED, R&B and District Administration Anantnag.
The protesters said that UEED under a centrally sponsored scheme started work on drainage system some six months ago in the district. They said neither the drainage network was completed nor the dug up material was buried.
“This dug up material has dried and has become continuous source of dust and air pollution,” said a local protester.
“Look at the condition of our houses. All our rooms are filled with dust. Even shopkeepers are facing difficulties. The dust disfigures their commodities,” he added.
“When they started this project in these areas, we felt very happy as we are facing many problems without a drainage system. But now we think they won’t complete this project on time and we now have to face more water logging and dust problems,” the protestors said.
In winter, protesters fear, the localities problems will double and crossing the muddy roads will be the biggest challenge for common people.
We repeatedly brought the issue into the notice of District Development Commissioner Anantnag but nothing changed on the ground. They said R&B Department had promised that they will macadamize the roads after Eid, however, words didn’t change into action.
