Governor Malik pays tributes to Karbala martyrs

Srinagar: Governor Satya Pal Malik paid tributes to the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and other martyrs of Karbala.

In a message on the eve of Aashoor-e-Muharram, the Governor said that Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions sacrificed their lives for upholding the high values of truth, justice and righteousness. He added that their martyrdom reminds mankind of the high principles of human dignity and morality.

Governor prayed for peace, harmony and normalcy in the State.

however, on Wednesday, dozens of Shia Muslim mourners were detained by the police to prevent them from taking out Muharram procession in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar.

Restrictions were placed in parts of the city falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Sherghari, Kothibagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Maisuma, and Kral Khud police stations to stop processions.

Reports said that dozens of mourners tried to take out procession from Batamaloo area of the city but a large posse of police intercepted them near Fire and Emergency Service Headquarters at Batamaloo and bundled them in police vans.

Chairman Hurriyat (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while condemning the restrictions across Srinagar to prevent Muharram processions said that the city has been held hostage by the rulers.

After 29 years, Shia mourners were able to take out the Muharram procession in Lal Chowk, which has been disallowed by the government. Reports said that after continuous clashes, groups of mourners were able to reach Lal Chowk and successfully march in the Muharram procession.
