Mirwaiz strongly condemns JKLF chief Malik’s arrest over ULB poll boycott call

Srinagar: Chairman Hurriyat conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday strongly condemned the arbitrary arrest of  of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Muhammad Yasin Malik yesterday.

On Twitter, he said, “Strongly condemn the arbitrary arrest of Yasin sb by the authorities. No amount of intimidation can prevent leadership from speaking the truth and serving its cause in J&K.Neither will detaining youth& Hurriyat activists and raiding their homes stop them from supporting the cause.”

On Tuesday, police had detained Yasin Malik in Srinagar to prevent him from carrying out an election boycott campaign.

Municipal elections are scheduled to hold from October 8 in four phases in Jammu and Kashmir.

The JRL has asked people to boycott the elections as they were “just farce and aimed at diluting the basic nature of Kashmir dispute”.

Earlier, on the last day of filing nominations for the second phase of urban local body (ULB) elections in JK, as many as 772 candidates filed their nominations in Kathua, Udhampur, Doda and Ramban districts,, election officials said on Friday.

Nominations were filed by 380 candidates in Kathua district on Thursday, followed by 198 in Udhampur district, 120 in Doda district and 74 in Ramban district.

The candidates have filed nominations for five municipal committees and one municipal council of the district, the officials said, adding 266 men and 114 women are in fray for the polls.
