Srinagar: Fresh exchange of fire reportedly took place between militants and armed forces in Shatgund village of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

An official said that ‘a joint team of the state police and the army launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Shatgund Qalamabad area around 2:30 AM’.

He said that the forces fired some speculative shots at the spot where militants were hiding.

He said that contact was established today morning after forces searched the area for nearly six hours.

An intermittent exchange of fire was going on when the report was filed, reported GNS news agency.

Meanwhile, authorities have closed educational institutions in Kupwara district and suspended class work in educational institutions in parts of the Valley.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out near the gunfight area between protesters and armed forces. Reports said that protesters took to streets soon after the news of gunfight spread and pelted the forces deployed in the area with stones.

The forces responded by firing tear gas shells.
