‘Appointed Governors are the new Viceroys’: Chidambaram on Governor Malik’s Indo-Pak talks remark

Posted on

Former Finance and Home Minister of India P Chidambaram on Friday said that the Governors and Lieutenant Governors are the ‘new viceroys’ of India.

The senior congress leader was reacting to JK Governor Malik’s remarks that ‘regional political parties have no right to talk about India-Pakistan dialogue.’

In a series of tweets, Chidambaram said:

Governor Malik, referring to the National Conference and the PDP, said in Srinagar on Wednesday, “These [political parties] have no right to talk about India-Pakistan peace talks. It is between governments of the two nations, as being neighbours makes it obvious that talks will happen for sure. But political parties bringing up the issue of Pakistan into dialogue process was neither acceptable to us then, nor will it be now.”

While reacting to his comments, the regional parties had said that ‘silencing will worsen the situation’.

National Conference (NC) provincial president, Nasir Aslam Wani said that nobody has a right in democracy to decide what others say. “The leadership in Jammu and Kashmir, its people will always talk about Pakistan as the neighborly ties of the countries are directly linked with the people,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief, G A Mir said that the Jammu and Kashmir is part of the country and JK parties are also part of democratic system.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said that the party is not a sycophant but the representative of peoples’ aspirations.
