Srinagar: Widespread rain and snow has been forecast in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday as the minimum temperatures improved while day temperatures were likely to fall further, a weather official said.

Sonam Lotus, Director of the regional Met Department, said light snow was likely in the state’s higher reaches while the plains would receive rain during the next 48 hours.

The minimum temperature was 2.6 in Srinagar while it was 1.1 and minus 3.4 in Pahalgam and Gulmarg respectively. Kargil town at minus 6.4 was the coldest town in the state on Monday while the night’s lowest temperature was minus 1.4 in Leh town.
Jammu city recorded 12.8, Katra 13.0, Batote 7.6, Bannihal 4.8 and Bhaderwah 4.6 as the minimum temperatures.

Due to adverse weather, authorities have closed the Mughal road connecting the valley with the Poonch district as a precautionary measure for three days.

The Valley received unexpected snowfall few days back and as a result there was a complete power breakdown across Kashmir.

The entire Valley plunged into darkness due to the sudden snowfall that occurred in November 3. The unpreparedness on part of authorities shocked one and all. The Jammu and Kashmir Governor administration came under heavy criticism following the incident.

Given the extent of damage to the agriculture and horticulture crops/produce and farm infrastructure due to snowfall of November, 3 and 4, the SEC approved notifying the snowfall as a State Specific Special Natural Calamity for the purpose of providing additional relief/assistance to the affected farmers from SDRF. Further, the SEC clarified that the untimely/intense snow fall of Nov 3 and 4 will be considered a natural calamity within the SDRF guidelines.

An official said that they are ready to meet any challenge this time.

A MeT official said that there is every possibility of scattered to fairly widespread rain/snowfall in Valley from November 12 to 14. He added that advisory for 3 days from November 12 to 14 has already been sent to the administration.
