Srinagar: PDP President Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said that the Governor Satya Pal Malik’s ‘encroachment into democratic space’ will force them to start an agitation.
Addressing a presser at her Gupkar residence, the former Chief Minister said that ‘speed at which the Governor is taking decisions, it seems there is a hidden hiand behind them with a definite agenda.
“What is the urgency to issue orders on a daily basis? If the trend doesn’t stop, we will be forced to launch a peaceful agitation,” said Mufti on the reported proposal of the Governor to give Ladakh area status of a division.
While talking about the Governor’s recent decisions which created controversies including the ones on JK Bank, Roshini Act and the PRC rules, Mehbooba said that all these moves have added to the insecurities of the people.
“We had hoped that the governor will be cautious in dealing with the sensitivities of the state. But unfortunately every day orders which add to insecurities of the people are being issued. Except few political parties, no one else is worried.”
“We respect governor sahib. Why is he (Governor) encroaching into democratic space? There is no emergency in issuing such orders. It seems somebody’s agenda is being run here and I hope Governor sahib is not involved in this,” said Mehbooba.
Moreover, according to a report in the Indian Express, the Governor is likely to bring in a new juvenile justice law after repealing the existing Act which was introduced in 2013 and implemented last year.
On Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference asserted that the Governor administration should refrain from making changing in the state juvenile laws.
In a statement, party Chief Spokesperson Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi while expressing dismay over the incompatible intervention of SAC into the state’s juvenile justice act said, “As reported by some media, Governor Administration is mulling change in the juvenile justice laws. We however urge the incumbent governor administration to have wider consultations on the issue. The governor should carry out wider consultations across the political spectrum of state on this issue,” he said.
