Mehbooba calls Mirwaiz, expresses outrage over desecration of Jamia’s pulpit by masked hooligans

Srinagar: PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday while reacting over the desecration of the Jamia Masjid’s pulpit by masked youth on Friday, said that ‘barbaric forces can’t be allowed to defile the most important religious and cultural landmarks of Kashmir.’

Mehbooba called Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the Chairman of the Hurriyat (M) to express her outrage over the incident.

In another tweet, Mehbooba said:

After the Friday congregational prayers, a group of masked boys entered the Jamia Masjid and desecrated the pulpit of the mosque.

The incident took place in Jama Masjid in the afternoon after the namazis had left. In the meantime his associates videotaped it.

In the video which was widely shared on social media, the hooligans can be seen on the Mimbar (Pulpit) of the mosque waving the ISIS flag. They can also be heard chanting slogans in favour of ISIS (Daulat-e-Islam).

Religious body Anjuman Auqaf, Jama Masjid, had strongly condemned the incident.

“This clearly indicates that this incident was deliberate and planned. It has naturally led to shock and deep resentment among people and deeply hurt their sentiments associated with the mosque,” Auqaf had said in a statement.

“The attempt to desecrate Jamia mosque by this lumpen group of hooligans, whose identity is not known as yet as they hide it behind masks, nor the identity of those is known on whose behest they are indulging in these shameful acts, is strongly condemnable. It shows utter disregard of this group of miscreants for Islamic institutions, values and Islamic teachings. Such elements not only malign the name of Islam but also abuse it.”
