JKLF Chief Yasin Malik slams ‘criminal silence of world community over oppression of Kashmiris’

Yasin Malik, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front has slammed the ‘criminal silence adopted by the international community over the oppression of Kashmiris by the Indian forces’.

In a video message shared with the Dawn, Malik thanked Pakistan for standing in solidarity with the people of Kashmir on Feb 5, which is observed as ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’.

“On this day, I would like to ask the international community,  was it you who said that there could only be a military solution in Afghanistan?” he asked. “Today the same international community is talking to the Taliban for peace in Afghanistan, because it has understood that no nation can be defeated using military might, and that the solution to all problems lies in talks.”

The JKLF chairman observed that the international community “has adopted a stance of criminal silence on Kashmir”, even as infants, elders, and youths lose their lives and property to the cause each day.

“The citizens of Kashmir are people too,” Malik asserted, adding that is why the international community ─ which seeks global peace and is making efforts for peace in Afghanistan ─ should make similar efforts for resolving the Kashmir issue “so that there is true peace in South Asia”.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who is in London to attend the ‘Kashmir Conference’ said that India was committing grave human rights violations in Kashmir, stressing that the right to self-determination was a basic right of the Kashmiri people.

Addressing the media after the international conference, Qureshi thanked members of the British Parliament for tabling a joint resolution on the Kashmir issue — a development he termed as “massive”.

Meanwhile, India had raised objections with the United Kingdom for allowing Pakistan to use their Parliament as a ‘stage’ for a Kashmir Conference.

Recently, Qureshi rang up Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and briefed him about the efforts being made by his country to highlight the ‘human rights violations committed in Kashmir by the Indian forces’.

According to a statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, Qureshi briefed Mirwaiz on the efforts of the government of Pakistan to highlight the “gross human rights violations being perpetrated by the Indian forces in Jammu and Kashmir.”

However, India summoned Pak High Commissioner Sohail Mahmood to raise their objections.

However, Islamabad, in a statement, justified its engagement with Hurriyat Conference leader, with the Pakistan Foreign Ministry saying it “categorically rejects the objections raised by India”.
