Decision to extend winter vacation purely based on weather advisories, says Divisional Commissioner

Srinagar: As the government of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) recently extended winter vacations ‘due to inclement weather’, the insecurity of the locals due to the prevailing situation between India and Pakistan has increased.

However, according to the higher-ups, the decision was taken based on the inconvenience faced by people due to the prolonged Highway closure.

The winter vacations in colleges and schools in J&K have been extended to March 10. The institutions were supposed to resume the class work on March 5. While the officials say it follows after the weather advisory, the weather at present is good enough for students to attend their classes.

“The way winter vacations are being extended unnecessarily, the way exams in universities are being postponed, it is only pointing to one thing: the authorities are hiding something from us,” says Bashir Ahmed, father of two. He says that the cruical school time of kids gets wasted anyway on the days of strikes and the delay to open schools adds to it.

“We have worked in more adverse conditions than this. It is just that the authorities are not admitting to the fact that something big is on cards,” adds Ahmed.

According to the Directorate of School Education officials, the board is only following the orders from the Administration. Speaking to Free Press Kashmir, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan said, “There are basically many reasons for it. The Highway was closed for so long recently and many students couldn’t come back. Every day we were getting representations from them and people who live in far-flung areas. The weather advisory was also not good. Now, the institutions will open on 10th. There is nothing to worry about.”

“It has nothing to do with war and all. It is purely based on weather advisories,” he said.
