Iran has announced partial withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, state television reported.
According to a report by the Al Jazeera, Iran has delivered letters to ambassadors outlining its partial withdrawal. Letters have been delivered to the leaders of Britain, China, the European Union, France and Germany.
All were signatories to the nuclear deal, under which Iran limited its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. A letter was also sent to Russia.
The country’s foreign ministry said: “The decision of the high security council to ‘stop acting on some of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s commitments under the JCPOA [nuclear deal]’ was communicated to the heads of state of the countries” still party to the deal.
The move came a year to the date United States President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the accord. Since then the US has restored crippling economic sanctions on Iran, even as Tehran continued to abide by the accord, according to UN inspectors.
Recently, the Trump administration asked five nations, including allies Japan, South Korea and Turkey, that they will no longer be exempt from US sanctions if they continue to import oil from Iran.
