Cyclone Nisarga likely to make landfall near Mumbai tomorrow

Cyclonic storm Nisarga is likely to turn into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ in the next 24 hours and hit coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat in the evening hours of June 3.

According to the IMD, cyclone Nisarga is likely to make landfall near Mumbai tomorrow. “The landfall location will be very close to Alibag but extensive damage can be expected in Mumbai also,” said Sunita Devi, in-charge of cyclones at the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD said that the storm surge of about 1-2 meters height above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts.

For now it is 490 km away from Mumbai, but when Cyclone Nisarga will cross Mumbai there are chances of very heavy rainfall.

“We have issued a red alert for Mumbai as extremely heavy rain is expected at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Nasik, Nandurbar and Dhule on June 3,” IMD has said.

IMD stated that it is very likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm ‘Nisarga’ during next 12 hours and further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 12 hours.

“It is very likely to move nearly northwards during next six hours and recurve north-northeastwards thereafter and cross north Maharashtra and adjoining south Gujarat coast between Harihareshwar (Raigad, Maharashtra) and Daman during the afternoon of June 3,” as per IMD.
