9 militants killed in Kashmir in the last 24 hours in two separate gunfights in Shopian

Srinagar: Nine militants, belonging to the militant group, Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) have been killed in less than 24 hours in two separate gunfights in the villages of Pinjura and Reban of the district Shopian.

As per the armed forces, on Sunday morning, the army, CRPF and police personnel began a cordon and search operation in the area of Reban based on information received regarding the presence of militants in the area.

At around 7 am the gunfight between the forces and militants started in Reban, which lasted for over 11 hours.

Five militants of the HM were killed in this 11 hour clash.

This morning another fire-fight began in the Pinjura village also falling in the Shopian district.

As per the armed forces, militants fired at the team of army’s 44 RR, police and CRPF, which resulted in an escalation. Four militants of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in this early morning gunfight. A search operation was still ongoing when reports last came.

In the clash that took place in Reban, two houses were burnt to ashes. Police has said that three rifles and 2 pistols were recovered from the debris.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir zone, Vijay Kumar, said, “five militants were killed with no collateral damage, they belonged to HM. Their identity is being ascertained. However according to credible inputs, one of them was a top commander.”

According to a police official the bodies of the militants would be taken either to Sonamarg or Baramulla for burial. Lately, police have been denying the bodies of militants to their families as ‘their funerals attract large crowds’.

Internet connectivity has been snapped in the districts of Shopian and Kulgam.
