Two militants killed in Kulgam gunfight, says Police

Srinagar: Police on Saturday said that two militants were killed during an encounter in Arreh village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Police said that after receiving a specific input about the presence of the militants in Arreh village, a joint team of armed forces including Jammu and Kashmir police, army’s 34 RR and 18 battalion of CRPF, launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

In the gunfight, two militants were killed and their bodies were subsequently retrieved from the site. Police has identified one of the slain militant as Ali Bhai alias Hyder, a foreigner, and the identification of the another slain is yet to be ascertained. The slain duo were associated with militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen.

Police said that incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of gunfight. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes.

The statement said that bodies of the slain duo have been sent to Handwara for their last rites after conducting medico-legal formalities including collection of their DNA.  However, if any family claims the militant to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for his identification and participation in last rites at Handwara.

Police said that in this connection, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Kulgam and investigation has been initiated.

Earlier reports said that in the gunfight, three armed personnel including Junior Commissioned Officer received minor injuries, who have later evacuated to 92 Base hospital for the treatment.
