Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning reported two more deaths attributed to COVID, taking the fatality count due to the virus to 238 in J&K.

Official sources said that one of the victims was an 84-year-old man from Baramulla and other a 50-year-old woman from Rajouri district.

Regarding the man, they said, he was admitted to SKIMS Soura on July 16, as a case of “bilateral CAP (community-acquired pneumonia) in ward number 3A. The patient expired at 11:15 pm,” a senior doctor at SKIMS said.

The woman from Rajouri, a senior doctor at GMC Jammu said she was admitted to the hospital on July 16. “She passed away at 2 am,” the doctor added.

With these deaths, 219 people in Kashmir and 19 in Jammu have died so far due to the COVID.

Srinagar district with 59 deaths has the highest fatalities followed by Baramulla district reporting 49 deaths so far.

Meanwhile, doctors at Srinagar hospitals have noticed a new and disturbing phenomenon of the increasing number of pneumonia cases, especially amongst the youth.

Speaking to Free Press Kashmir, Doctor Tramboo earlier had said that younger people are getting more symptoms – which wasn’t the trend initially. “The X-Rays are showing advance pneumonia upon admission and that the treatment in such cases becomes difficult.”

The doctors also believe that laws about wearing masks or following social distancing should be framed and exercised.

On the other hand, in an order issued on Wednesday, Financial Commissioner, Health and Medical Education, Atal Dulloo, restricted all the medical institutes of J&K from sharing COVID related details with the media organisations.

The global coronavirus count is now over 1.42 crore, while the toll has crossed 6 lakh, according to the Johns Hopkins University. More than 79.84 lakh people have recovered so far. The university’s tally as of Saturday night says the United States tops the list with 140,103 deaths. It is followed by 78,772 fatalities in Brazil and 45,358 in the United Kingdom.

The number of confirmed infections worldwide has passed 14.2 million. There are over 2 million in Brazil and more than 1 million in India.

The World Health Organisation again reported a single-day record of new infections with 2,59,848 worldwide.
