Two militants killed in gunfight in Srinagar, says Police

Srinagar: Two militants were killed in an ongoing gunfight that broke out in Ranbirgarh area in Srinagar outskirts on Saturday.

The Kashmir Police took to its official twitter handle and tweeted that two unidentified militants were killed in Randirbagh and the search operations in the area are still underway.

The gunfight broke out in Ranbirgarh Panzinara, outskirts of Srinagar today morning following a search operation, Kashmir Police tweeted from its official handle.

An official said that Army personnel sustained injuries during the gunfight and was rushed to the Army’s base hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Police in a statement issued today said that on a specific input regarding presence of militants in village Ranbirgarh-Panzinara area of Srinagar, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by JKP, 29RR and CRPF in the said area.

During the search operation as the presence of militants got ascertained they were given the opportunity to surrender, however they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to a gunfight.

In the ensuing gunfight, two unidentified militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the gunfight.  However, the identification and affiliation of the slain militants is being ascertained.

Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the gunfight. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes.

Police added that bodies of the slain militants shall be sent to Ganderbal for their last rites after conducting medico-legal formalities including a collection of their DNA.

In case any family claims the slain to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification at PCR Srinagar/ Burial place and participation in last rites at Ganderbal.

In this connection a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Parimpora and investigation has been initiated, police said.
