With over 49k fresh COVID cases, India’s tally crosses 14 lakh mark

Srinagar: The novel Coronavirus infections in India continue to mount as the country’s total case tally has crossed the 14-lakh mark.

According to the Health Ministry of India, fresh 49,931 COVID cases were reported in 24 last hours, taking the total tally to 14.3 lakh.

Moreover, as per the data, more than 9.1 lakh patients have recovered so far.

At present, there are 14,35,453 confirmed cases, 4,85,114 active cases and 9,17,568 patients have been discharged, cured so far.

On Sunday, India reported 48,916 new cases during the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 13,36,861, the government data shows.

The country also witnessed 757 virus-related deaths during the period, according to the data released by the Health Ministry.

With 31,358 deaths, the fatalities in India is now the sixth-biggest in the world; the country is behind the US, Brazil, Britain, Mexico and Italy.

Earlier on July 25, a week after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) gave its approval for conducting the human clinical trial of the COVID vaccine, a 30-year-old man was given the first dose of under trial vaccine Covaxin.

A total of 12 volunteers were called for a number of pre-tests that include blood and nasopharyngeal testing for the deadly coronavirus.

Soon after the results were found, 10 healthy individuals were selected for the vaccine to be given in phases, reports said adding, a report on their health condition will be submitted to the ethics committee, which will reviewing the entire process.

In wake of the COVID outbreak, recent research published by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), said that at least 40 million children worldwide have missed out on early childhood education in their critical pre-school year due to the COVID closing the childcare and early education facilities.

Earlier on July 21, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) chief Shekhar C Mande asserted that airborne transmission of COVID is indeed a “distinct possibility” and advised people to wear masks even in enclosed spaces.
