Srinagar: Authorities on Thursday in Sonitpur district of Assam state, imposed curfew and restrictions after clashes between people over Ram temple celebrations left at least 10 people injured from both the sides.

“Curfew imposed in Sonitpur district in areas falling under Thelamara and Dhekiajuli police stations. Movement of persons without special permission from the district magistrate shall not be permitted with effect from 10 pm of August 5,” Sonitpur deputy commissioner Manvendra Pratap Singh tweeted.

The decision to impose the curfew was taken after the locals in Thelamara objected to a bike rally being taken out by Bajrang Dal activists to mark the Ram Mandir event amid COVID outbreak, a report by a Delhi based newspaper Hindustan Times said.

Quoting an official source, the report said that bikers were playing loud music and were heading towards a temple in Thelamara when local residents objected to the rally being organised at the time of COVID pandemic and when there was a ban on such activities by the government of Assam.

Soon after the clashes began, several people sustained injuries. In response to this, police took to the action by resorting to aerial firing in order to bring the situation under control

“I am of the opinion that there exists a grave law and order situation due to the present scenario… whereas the groups are trying to indulge in violence in the name of protest and in view of the present event, there is apprehension of grave risks and danger to human lives and properties if persons are allowed to move freely,” Singh, according to the report, said in his curfew order, adding that it will remain continue till further orders.

In order to keep the situation under control, Indian Army has also conducted a flag march in the troubled areas of Sonitpur and an indefinite curfew has been clamped in areas under the jurisdictions of Thelamara and Dhekiajuli police stations.

Reports said that two people have been detained for the questioning by Assam police and at least ten people from both the sides have suffered injuries.

On August 5, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi performed bhumi pujan for Ram Mandir in Ayodhya Uttar Pradesh.

Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the prime minister arrived at the temple dressed in traditional dhoti-kurta.

Around 175 eminent guests had been invited for the ceremony. Besides Prime Minister Modi, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, Mahant Nritya Gopaldas Maharaj, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present on stage.
