Srinagar: On the eve of the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh (UP), on August 5, 2020, Indian National Congress general secretary in-charge of UP, Priyanka Gandhi, released a statement through her Twitter account saying that the occasion should symbolise “national unity, fraternity and cultural harmony”.

Priyanka’s tweeted appreciating “national unity” was followed by Rahul Gandhi’s tweet that Lord Ram is the embodiment of the highest human values and the fundamental sentiment of humanism that is housed in the depths of our hearts.

“Ram is love, he can never appear in hatred; Ram is compassion, he can never appear amidst cruelty; Ram is justice, he can never appear in the midst of injustice,” Rahul tweeted.

Rahul Gandhi’s in 2007 has said that demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya would not have happened had a Gandhi family member been in charge then.

On the same matter, Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor tweeted: “Justice for all, righteous conduct, fairness and firmness in all dealings, moral rectitude and courage. These values are much needed in such dark times. If they spread throughout the land, Ram Rajya would not be an occasion for triumphalist bigotry.”

As the Pooja was going on in Ayodhya, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh took to his twitter handle and congratulated the people of the country on the ceremony, saying it fulfils the “long-cherished desire” of every Indian.

“My heartiest congratulations to the people of India on the historic foundation laying of #RamMandir in #Ayodhya, which fulfils the long cherished desire of every Indian. Lord Ram’s universal message of Dharma remains the guiding light not just for India but for the world,” the chief minister said in a tweet.

However, the Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi was also slammed for his support to the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony.

Taking a dig at her, All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, said that he is glad that Congress party is not “pretending” anymore.

Owaisi tweeted, “Glad that they (Congress party) are not pretending anymore. It’s okay if they want to embrace this extremist ideology of Hindutva but why all this hollow talk about brotherhood? Don’t be shy, please be proud of your party’s contributions to the movement that demolished our Babri Masjid.”

In response to Owaisi’s statement, Congress Committee secretary V Hanumanth Rao said that Owaisi is craving for “political mileage” and is not able to “tolerate” Hindu-Muslim unity as communal he hears that communal harmony would weaken his leadership.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused the Congress of toeing the ‘soft Hindutva’ line, saying he was not surprised over party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s statement supporting the Ram temple construction in Ayodhya.

“We all know who opened the doors of the temple and who allowed ‘Kar Sewa’ which ultimately led to the demolition of the Masjid. The Congress always supported soft Hindutva. So I did not find any surprise in the statements of Congress leaders, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi,” the CM was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.

In this regard, the Indian Union Muslim League, has also passed a resolution expressing displeasure over Priyanka Gandhi’s statement, saying her statement was inappropriate and reminded Congress leaders not to dilute their secular credentials.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the functionaries who led the Pooja in Ayodhya. Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the prime minister arrived at the temple dressed in traditional dhoti-kurta.

Around 175 eminent guests had been invited for the ceremony. Besides Prime Minister Modi, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, Mahant Nritya Gopaldas Maharaj, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present on stage.

Pertinently, Iqbal Ansari, one of the main litigants in Ayodhya land dispute case, who attended the function yesterday, said that he visited Ram Janmabhoomi to send a message that Muslims are not “against” the Ram Mandir.

Ansari, according to reports, had received the first invitation card for the ceremony. Ansari believes that he is duty-bound to accept the decision given by the supreme court of India.
