Srinagar: Two Jammu and Kashmir police personnel were killed and another injured on Friday morning after suspected militants attack police party near Nowgam bypass in Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.

Official sources said that suspected militants fired upon Police party near Nowgam bypass, resulting in injuries to three police personnel who were subsequently rushed to PCR Hospital Srinagar for the treatment.

Two among the three injured cops identified as Ishfaq Ayoub of 715 IRP 20 Battalion and Fayaz Ahmed of 307 IRP 20 Battalion, later succumbed to injuries at the hospital and another cop identified as Selection Grade Constable Muhammad Ashraf, who sustained bullet injuries in his right hand, is being treated at the hospital.

Officials said that the whole area has been cordoned-off to and searches are going on to nab the attackers.

Kashmir Zone Police, an official twitter handle of Kashmir police tweeted: “Militants fired indiscriminately on police party near Nowgam bypass. Three police personnel injured. They were shifted to hospital for treatment where two succumbed. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow.”

The attack comes a day before August 15, when the entire Kashmir is on a high alert especially Srinagar district. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir had yesterday stated that foolproof security arrangements are in place to thwart “militant strikes” and to conduct all functions smoothly.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that the attack was carried out by Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit.
