Saffron clad mob ‘brutally attacks’ Muslim father-son duo over cow in Jammu’s Reasi

Police have booked 14 people from the Hindu community for assault

Srinagar: On the morning of August 15, when Mohammad Asgar, a resident of Gari village of Reasi district in Jammu and Kashmir, got frequent phone calls by a group of men from a nearby Hindu community, asking him to meet, little did he know that meeting with them will end up in him being brutally assaulted.

Three days back, a cow of a Hindu family had walked into the agricultural land belonging to Asgar when he was away from his village.

Some children in Asgar’s family spotted the cow grazing the crop and pelted stones on the cow as their crop was being damaged.

Asgar’s nephew, Nazir Ahmed, told Free Press Kashmir that, two days after the happening, when Asgar returned home, he along with his son Javaid Ahmed, decided to meet the Hindu men who were frequently calling him.

At around 12: 30 pm, on August 15, when the father-son duo left home to meet them, they were called at a particular spot, and as soon as they reached they were grabbed and assaulted brutally, Nazir said, adding that after some time Javaid managed to escape from the violent mob.

However, Asgar was beaten to a pulp and left badly injured. “We thought that even if they demand money, we will give the money as reimbursement,” Nazir told Free Press Kashmir.

“Asgar sustained multiple injuries and Javaid’s arm was also fractured,” he added.

According to the family, when the furious looking mob was hitting Asgar and Javaid, police personnel who managed to reach on the spot, rather than stopping the mob told them “Bus Kro Ab, Warna Mar Gayega” (stop beating now, else he will die).

“The words were uttered in Dogri language,” Nazir said who has seen the video of the incident, making rounds on social media platforms. The video taken perhaps by one of the men is viral on social media.

Commenting on the incident, Station House Officer (SHO), Police Station Arnas, the concerned police station of the village, told Free Press Kashmir that based on the First Information Report (FIR) registered by Asgar’s family, Police have booked 14 people belonging to the Hindu community so far, and further investigations are going on.

He said, there are two FIRs registered, one was registered by Asgar’s family and other by the Hindu community alleging Asgar’s family of injuring the cow with the “sharp-edged” tool on August 12.

When asked about the expected date of the arrests, the police officer said: “investigations are going on and strict action will be taken against the accused, if found guilty”.
