8 killed, many injured as Madhya Pradesh witnesses heavy rains, ‘efforts on to rescue others’

Srinagar: As rains continue inundating Madhya Pradesh, India, a 35-year-old woman was killed and three others were injured when a house collapsed following heavy downpour, at Sehore district of the state.

According reports, so far, nearly 60 stranded people have been airlifted from a village in the district by an IAF helicopter.

As the state is witnessing heavy rains from last three days, nearly 7,000 people have so far been rescued across the state and 170 relief camps are set up in the affected districts, Manish Rastogi, the principal secretary to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, told News18.

Eight people have been killed in rain-related incidents in Madhya Pradesh and efforts are currently underway to evacuate nearly 1,200 people stranded in 40 flooded villages of the state, the report quoted Chief Minister Shivraj Singh, as having said.

According to Chouhan, over 7,000 people stranded in 454 villages of 12 districts were evacuated in the last two days, as heavy rains hit large parts of the state.

He added that water level of the Narmada river, which flows across various districts of the state, has not risen further.

In Madhya Pradesh, heavy rains pounded nine districts of the state, including Hoshangabad, Sehore, Chhindwara and Narshinghpur, leading to a rise in the level of the Narmada river at some places.

As the rains continued, a woman identified as Ruksar Bi lost her life as her house in district’s Ashta area collapsed around 3: 10, am, on Sunday.

The police officials according to News18, added that three others who were trapped under the debris of the collapsed house were later pulled out and admitted to a hospital.

In order to evacuate the stranded people, three helicopters belonging to Indian Air Force (IAF) have been pressed into the service and so far 60 people were rescued.

Reports added that one more chopper would join in the rescue operation shortly.

According to the state’s Revenue Commissioner, an army column comprising 70 personnel is deployed in Hoshangabad and five more columns of the defence force are going to join in soon.
