Criminal case registered against Kangana Ranaut for equating protesting farmers of India with ‘terrorists’

Karnataka: A criminal case has been lodged at the Tumkur JMFC Court in Karnataka state of India against Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut for calling the farmers opposing controversial farm bills, “terrorists”. In this regard, a case Under Section 44, 108, 153, 153A and 504 of IPC, has been registered.

Earlier, the controversial actress reacted to a tweet by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on the farm bills and doubts surrounding the MSP regime, Kangana Ranaut took to her twitter handle and wrote: “Prime Minister, if anyone’s sleeping, they can be woken up, if someone doesn’t understand, they can be explained, but what can be done when someone is acting to be asleep or doesn’t want to understand? These are the same terrorists. Not one citizenship was lost due to CAA, but they ended up spilling so much blood.”

Kangana Ranaut ended up comparing the protesting farmers and Opposition leaders to “terrorists” and equating them with the anti-CAA protests that rocked the country since the end of 2019.

However, the 33-year-old actress is not new to the controversies. On September 11, when the actress tried to use the name of Kashmiris Pandits and their departure from the valley she was widely criticised by a number of Kashmiri Pandits as she was using them for her “personal gains”.

In a video posted on her official Twitter handle, Ranaut went on to compare the demolition of her office, which BMC officials had razed for “illegal alterations” in Mumbai, with the plight of Kashmiri Pandits.

Referring to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray‎, the actress said: “In a way, you have done me a favour. I always knew what Kashmiri Pandits suffered through, but today I felt it firsthand… Uddhav Thackeray, there is a meaning of this torture and terror unleashed on me.”

In the video, she also pledged to make a film on Kashmiri Pandits, saying that she now understands what KPs might have gone through.

However, her comments did not go well and she was criticised by a number of Kashmiri Pandits for using them to “fetch an audience for herself”.

Pertinently, the three bills that were passed are the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill.

The farm bill is a package of legislation passed roughly once every five years, which has a tremendous impact on farming livelihoods, how food is grown, and what kinds of foods are grown. Covering programs ranging from crop insurance for farmers to healthy food access for low-income families, from beginning farmer training to support for sustainable farming practices, the farm bill sets the stage for the food and farm systems.
