Mehbooba Mufti released after 14 months as JK Admin revokes her PSA

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday revoked PSA detention of former Chief Minister of JK Mehbooba Mufti.

JK administration’s Home department this evening revoked PSA detention order of Mehbooba Mufti.

Mehbooba was detained hours before the government of India nullified Article 370 and re-organised JK into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019.

“In an order issued by Principal Secretary to the JK Administration’s Home Department, Shaleen Kabra, in the exercise of powers conferred under section 19 (1) of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety act, 1978, the government hereby revokes the detention order bearing, No DMS/PSA/147/2020 dated 5-2-2020 issued by the district magistrate, Srinagar which was last extended for a period of three months vide order number Home/PB-V/1`449 of 2020 dated 31-07-2020 of Mehbooba Mufti, daughter of Late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, a resident of Bijbehara at present Nowgam Srinagar with immediate effect,” the administration said in an order.

Mehbooba has been in detention since August 5, 2019, when GoI stripped JK of its semi-autonomous status, revoked its statehood and split the erstwhile state into two Union Territories. She has been in custody for seven months, which was set to expire in February 2020 but then new detention was passed under PSA.

In 2019, Mufti’s was detained under Section 107 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which empowers an executive magistrate to order a person to execute bonds “for keeping the peace”.

Meanwhile, Mehbooba’s daughter Iltija Mufti who was handling her mother’s Twitter account has handed over the handle to her mother.

“As Ms Mufti’s illegal detention finally comes to an end, Id like to thank everybody who supported me in these tough times. I owe a debt of gratitude to you all. This is Iltija signing off. فی امان اﷲ May allah protect you,” Iltija wrote.
