Heaps of haystack ‘mysteriously’ burn in south Kashmir’s Anantnag

Anantnag: In a mysterious fire, rice straw hay bundles were reduced to ashes in Chee area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Sunday evening. Eyewitnesses told Free Press Kashmir that around 6:00 pm, a ‘mysterious’ blaze around the paddy fields destroyed heaps of dry haystacks.

Locals said that at least 7,500 bundles were charred, out of which 4,000 bundles belonged to Azad Ahmad Dar, Manzoor Ah Dar and Abdul Aziz Ganie, and 3,500 hay bundles belonged to Mohd Ashraf Rather, all residents of Chee Anantnag.

“We alerted the Fire and Emergency department and then fire tenders reached the spot,” a local told Free Press Kashmir.

Eyewitnesses say that the fire department team, and the locals, were finally able to douse the flames but the damage had been done.

“This was a mysterious fire, we want the authories to investigate this matter seriously,” locals said.

Earlier in the month, the district’s Deethu area witnessed a similar incident in which ‘unidentified men’ had burnt paddy harvest on October 7, 2020.

Four days after the incident, crops in Shangus also caught fire, but the locals maintain that they were ‘set ablaze in the dead of the night’.
