At least four people have died and several others injured after thousands of angry “supporters of President Donald Trump” stormed the US Capitol and clashed with police on Wednesday, international media reported.
According to reports, the protesters targeted a constitutional process to affirm Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Many of the president’s supporters called for their votes to be counted, demanding that the election results, already certified by the US Electoral College in favour of President-elect Joe Biden, be overturned.
President Trump, who earlier encouraged his supporters to head to the Capitol, urged them to abide by the law and go back home after the violent clash. “This was a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home,” Trump said in a video message posted on Twitter.
Reacting to the developments, President-elect Biden said he was shocked and sad to see the US has “come to such a dark moment”.
Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has said that is seeking information that will assist in identifying individuals who are actively instigating violence in Washington DC. Meanwhile, the police have said at least 52 people have been arrested in this regard.
After blocking at Twitter and Facebook, social media platform Instagram has also blocked US President Donald Trump from posting on their platforms. “We are locking President Donald Trump’s Instagram account for 24 hours as well,” reports quoted Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, as having said.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has said he’s “distressed to see news about rioting and violence in Washington DC”.
