73 years after Gandhi’s assassination, #NathuramGodseAmarRahe trends on Twitter India

New Delhi: On the 73rd anniversary of the assasination India’s ‘father of the nation’ Gandhi, a hashtag #NathuramGodseAmarRahe is trending on the social media giant Twitter.

Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.

On Twitter, while one user thanked “Nathu bhai” for saving the nation, another user said, “I don’t know, why it is trending today.”

One user while praising the Godse wrote: “Tribute to #NathuramGodse for saving lives of many Hindus… saved the nation from doom. Not my father of the nation #MahatmaGandhi but Nathuram.”

Earlier this month, Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha had opened ‘Godse Gyanshala’, a library dedicated to Godse at its Gwalior office. However, two days later, district authorities shut it down and also seized its material over law and order concerns.

In 2017, the Hindu Mahasabha had installed a Godse statue in the state, where prayer meetings were to be held. However, it was removed soon after and a case was registered against the members of the right-wing group.

However, this is not the first time Godse hashtags are trending on Twitter, earlier on Gandhi’s birthday on October 2, a number of tags praising Godse trended on twitter. The most prominent hashtag eulogising Gandhiji’s assassin was #GodseAmarRahe.

While there were only 15k tweets around the trend by 8 pm, Godse’s name also trended with nearly 20k tweets.

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut while sharing the picture of Godse wrote: “Every story has three sides to it, yours, mine and the truth …. A good story teller neither commits nor conceals… and that’s why our text books suck … full of exposition #NathuramGodse.”

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi while Paying tribute to Gandhi on Saturday said that his ideas continue to motivate millions.

In a tweet, Modi said, “tributes to the great Bapu on his Punya Tithi. His ideals continue to motivate millions. On Martyrs’ Day, we recall the heroic sacrifices of all those great women and men who devoted themselves towards India’s freedom and the well-being of every Indian.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to the ‘father of the nation’ saying, “truth stands, even if there be no public support. It is self-sustained’- Mahatma Gandhi. A humble tribute to Bapu on his death anniversary.”
