Maharashtra: On Monday, twelve BJP MLAs were suspended from the Maharashtra legislative assembly for one year after the state government accused them of “misbehaving” with presiding officer Bhaskar Jadhav in the speaker’s chamber.
A resolution was passed to suspend 12 MLAs for one year for abusing and manhandling the speaker in the chair, Times of India reported.
The 12 suspended BJP MLAs are Sanjay Kute, Ashish Shelar, Abhimanyu Pawar, Girish Mahajan, Atul Bhatkalkar, Parag Alavni, Harish Pimpale, Ram Satpute, Vijay Kumar Rawal, Yogesh Sagar, Narayan Kuche and Kirtikumar Bangdia.
The two-day monsoon session of the Maharashtra assembly got off to a stormy start today with the leader of the opposition Devendra Fadnavis targeting the state government over an MPSC aspirant’s suicide and the short duration of the session.
The report said that the BJP leader demanded that House members be allowed to use all legislative tools to highlight various issues and all questions submitted to be answered.
The motion to suspend the MLAs was moved by state Parliamentary affairs minister Anil Parab and passed by a voice vote, said the report.
During the period of suspension, the 12 legislators will not be allowed to enter the Legislature premises in Mumbai and Nagpur.
The presiding officer, Bhaskar Jadhav said that Devendra Fadnavis insisted he is allowed to speak first on proposal reservation of OBCs. “So I allowed him to speak. Later, Chhagan Bhujbal answered Fadnavis with evidence, which is why he & BJP became uneasy,” he was quoted as saying.
“I announced a 10-minute break & went to Speaker’s chamber. Fadnavis & other BJP leaders came & abused me. They tried to attack me. I tried to tell them that CCTV camera was there. That is why 12 BJP members were by-rule suspended from Maharashtra Assembly,” Bhaskar added.
Objecting to the decision, BJP members, led by Devendra Fadnavis, said the opposition would boycott the House proceedings, the report said.
“This is a false allegation and an attempt to reduce the numbers of opposition benches because we exposed the government’s falsehood on the OBC quota in local bodies,” Fadnavis was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, the suspended MLAs in the evening met Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in Mumbai.
