New Delhi: A day after a video of inflammatory, anti-Muslim slogans being raised at a protest in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar went viral on social media, Delhi Police have arrested the BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay and others involved in the incident.

Singh, who was questioned by the police till late last night was arrested on Monday along with five others, Outlook reported.

The accused were arrested following widespread outrage after videos of the violent slogans threatening harm to Muslims went viral on news and social media.

On Sunday, anti-Muslim slogans were raised at an event organized by former Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. BJP leader Gajendra Chauhan was also present.

The event, organised under the ‘Bharat Jodo Movement’, demanded the end of “colonial-era laws” by implementing a Uniform Civil Code.

In photos and videos of the event, people can also be seen flouting COVID protocol and not wearing face masks.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the event was held without police permission, and no action was taken till Sunday evening and the gathering was allowed to continue.

Several video clips doing the rounds on social media show communal, inflammatory and anti-Muslim slogans being raised at the event, including ones directly calling for Muslims to be murdered.

A journalist was also forced by a mob to chant “Jai Shri Ram” when he was covering the event. The journalist, Anmol Pritam, 24, works with YouTube media channel National Dastak.

Reports said the journalist had gone to Jantar Mantar to report on the march which had included the shouting of “inflammatory” and “anti-Muslim” slogans.

“When I reached, a group of about 300-400 people were chanting slogans such as ‘Jab mulle kaate jaynege to Ram-Ram chillayenge’,” he said.

Loosely translated, the slogan says, “When the Muslims will be killed, they will yell and shout Ram Ram,” Newslaundry quoted the journalist as saying.

However, Upadhyay has now claimed that the slogans were raised after his event was over and he has no knowledge about them.

“The rally was from 10 to 12 pm. Whereas the sloganeering happened around 5 pm. Our rally was outside the park hotel but the slogans were given near the Parliament house police station. I do not know who they were,” Upadhyay was quoted by Bar and Bench as saying.
