The Israeli municipality of Jerusalem forced 7 brothers to demolish their houses, leaving 140 people homeless, Palestine-based news agency Quds News Network reported.

The seven brothers belong to the Obeidi family, the report said, adding ‘They have set a tent on the rubble of their houses in Beit Hanina’.

“I’ve been living here for 15 years”, Ali Obeidi, one of the seven brothers, told a Jerusalem-based organization Wadi Hilweh Information Center.

“15 years here mean 15 years of suffering by the Israeli authorities. There has been a hearing every two months… I built [houses] for my seven brothers 10 years ago but at the end, a demolition order was issued against us all,” Ali was quoted further saying.

“We are seven brothers, nearly 140 members, most of them are children under the age of 16. We decided to demolish our houses ourselves to avoid the heavy fines.”

During the last years, Ali paid a 65,000 Shekel fine while his brother Mahmoud paid 35,000 Shekel, the report said.
