Srinagar: A Jammu and Kashmir police officer who led a team of cops to assault journalists while discharging professional duties in Srinagar has been removed from his position, DGP said on Wednesday.

Besides the removal of the police officer, several other cops have been transferred or attached, official sources said.

The DGP had ordered SSP Srinagar to take immediate action against the police officer for “undesirable behavior.”

“The police officer has been removed from his position,” the top police officer told Global News Service.

Meanwhile, three cops have been attached to DPL and six others have been transferred, the news agency reported quoting official sources.

ON Tuesday, Police had physically assaulted journalists who were covering the 8th Muharram procession in the city’s Jahangir Chowk area. The camera of one of the photojournalists was also damaged during the assault.

Earlier, the DGP said that he took serious view of undesirable behaviour by the police officer with some media persons in Srinagar yesterday.

He had asked SSP Srinagar to take immediate action against the ‘erring police officer’.
