‘They used sharp weapons’: Kashmiri youth brutally attacked by mob in Gurgaon

Tariq Bhat of Rajwara Handwara

Gurgaon: A Kashmiri youth was physically assaulted by unidentified men in Gurgaon area of Haryana on Thursday evening.

The incident took place at around 7:30 pm, on August 19, when Tariq Bhat, 22, left his office in sector 44 of Gurgaon and was walking towards his rented accommodation – some two kilometers away from his office.

Bhat told Free Press Kashmir that he had barely walked few minutes from the office when a group of unidentified men grabbed his neck, another blindfolded him and the rest began beating him continuously for around five minutes.

Bhat, who works as Financial Advisor in a financial technology company Policybazaar, said he kept pleading the mob to leave him but nobody among them uttered a word and they kept beating him.

“They also tried to hit me with the sharp-edged weapon,” he said. However, when he began screaming loudly the mob set free Bhat and fled from the spot.

Bhat is a resident of Rajwar area of north Kashmir’s Handwara district and has been working in Gurgaon for the last five months.

“This is the first time I faced such a brutal attack,” Bhat said, adding, he is the sole earner of his family and cannot continue working if he faces such attacks in the future.

Bhat was on way to his rented accommodation from police station Sushant Lok when he spoke to Free Press Kashmir. He said an FIR has been lodged against the assaulters.

Accompanied by various police officials, the Kashmiri youth said police have accessed the CCTV footage of the area where the incident took place.

“The Haryana police have co-operated with me,” Bhat said hoping the justice is being delivered to him in a timely manner.

Meanwhile, Nasir Khuehmani, a social worker and a student activist told Free Press Kashmir that he has spoken to the Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor and media advisor of Haryana Chief Minister, Amit Arya, to ensure justice is delivered to the victim.

Khuehmani was the first to highlight the issue on Twitter after the victim approached Jammu and Kashmir Students Association. Khuehmani is the media spokesperson of the association.

Meanwhile, the company where Bhat works (Policybazaar) has also responded and assured full support to their employee.

“We stand in support of our employee, Tariq Bhat & are in constant touch with local authorities to help him,” the company wrote on its official Twitter account.

“The wellness of our employees is paramount to us & we will do everything possible to ensure the safety of everyone from the Policybazaar family,” the company added.
