The 150 Indian citizens who were earlier stopped by Taliban near the airport this morning, have been released and are now inside Kabul airport, NDTV reported quoting sources.

The report quoting sources further said that the citizens will be airlifted out of Afghanistan soon.

Amid worrying reports of abduction, the Indian citizens waiting outside Kabul airport for evacuation flights were taken to a nearby police station for questioning and checking of travel documents, the report said quoting GoI source.

Earlier, reports claimed the Taliban had abducted over 150 people, including Indians. The Taliban rejected that claim; a tweet by Sharif Hassan, a Kabul-based reporter for The New York Times, quoted a spokesperson for the group.

India has evacuated all embassy staff but an estimated 1,000 citizens remain in several Afghan cities and ascertaining their location and condition is proving to be a challenge, a Home Ministry official told NDTV.

Foreign Minister of India S Jaishankar this week said the government of India is “very carefully” monitoring the situation in Kabul and Afghanistan, but that the immediate focus is on safely evacuating all citizens.
