The Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday registered an FIR after a temple was allegedly vandalised in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said.
The incident reportedly took place in Bargheshekha Bhagwati Mata temple at the Mattan area in Anantnag district.
The police, in a statement, said that at about 2:10 PM on Saturday “it was learnt through reliable sources that Barghshikha bhavani temple at mattan mountain ridge has been desecrated and defiled by some miscreants.”
The police filed an FIR (No 93/2021) under sections 295 and 427 IPC was registered and investigation was set into motion.
“Considering the sensitivity of the case, a special investigation team was constituted by SSP Anantnag headed by DYSP Hqrs Anantnag and basic formalties were conducted on spot and further investigation is going on,” the statement read.
The Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, Dr Piyush Singla, said that such immoral and illegal acts will not be tolerated and the culprits will be penalised as per relevant provisions of the law.
“Nobody will be allowed to harm or disrupt the social and communal harmony in society,” the deputy commissioner added.
Several political leaders, civil society members and general public on social media condemned the act by miscreants.
“Unacceptable. I strongly condemn this vandalism and urge the administration, especially Jammu and Kashmir Police, to identify the culprits so they can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Omar Abdullah, the National Conference (NC) vice president, tweeted.
The Peoples Conference president, Sajad Lone, also took to twitter to condemn the act. “Reports of vandalism at an ancient temple in Mattan. This is utterly deplorable. And the actions of a fringe lunatic minority. These r some psychopaths who derive pleasure out of destructive actions,” he said.
The People’s Democratic Party spokesperson Mohit Bhan urged the administration to “investigate the matter and book the perpetrators for discretion of temple.”
